Krijn Poppe (1955) groeide op op een akkerbouwbedrijf in Flevoland en studeerde bedrijfseconomie in Amsterdam en Rotterdam. In 1981 ging hij aan de slag bij het Landbouw Economisch Instituut, de voorloper van het huidige Wageningen Economic Research. Hij werd al snel verantwoordelijk voor rapportages over inkomensontwikkeling en effecten van beleid. Hij vertegenwoordigde jarenlang Nederland in het Europese Bedrijven-Informatienet (FADN) waarin de EU gegevens van 80.000 bedrijven laat verzamelen. In zijn eigen onderzoek richtte hij zich vooral op de bestuurlijke informatiekunde, zoals de standaardisatie in agrarische accountancy, milieuverslaggeving, de introductie van het Mineralen Aangifte Systeem MINAS en platformen voor data-uitwisseling. Als lid van het management van het LEI en WEcR droeg hij bij aan de vernieuwing van het instituut waarbij nieuwe terreinen rond consumentenonderzoek, ketenonderzoek en ict werden ontgonnen. Ook internationaliseerde het instituut afgelopen 40 jaar sterk. Poppe leidde zelf vele Europese onderzoeksprojecten, o.a. over de concurrentiepositie van de Europese voedselindustrie, de rol van coöperaties in de 27 EU landen en het ontwerp van een platform voor onderzoek naar voeding, leefstijl en gezondheid. Hij was lange tijd secretaris-generaal van de Europese Associatie van Agrarische Economen en is nu secretaris van de stichting die de wetenschappelijke bladen van de beroepsvereniging uitgeeft.

Afgelopen jaren concentreerde hij zich als boegbeeld van het instituut op beleidsadvisering en was enige tijd bij het Ministerie van LNV gedetacheerd als Chief Science Officer. Hij droeg in Brussel bij aan meer aandacht voor het Agrarisch Kennis- en Innovatiesysteem en bepleitte uitbreiding van het landbouwbeleid tot voedselbeleid, zodat ook andere partijen in de keten op hun prestaties worden aangesproken. Binnen Wageningen UR leidde hij multidisciplinaire onderzoeksprogramma’s over transities en over veerkracht. Krijn Poppe is een veelgevraagd spreker voor divers publiek en een actief gebruiker van sociale media voor communicatie van onderzoeksresultaten en economische inzichten.


Krijn J. Poppe is a business economist and worked for nearly 40 years as research manager at Wageningen Economic Research (formerly the Agricultural Economics Research Institute LEI) of Wageningen University and Research, located in The Hague, the Netherlands. He is also a member of the Council for the Environment and Infrastructure (RLI). 

For Wageningen UR he was involved in the management of several large, multidisciplinary research projects for the EU. Examples are Support of Farmers' Cooperatives (for DG Agri, 2011-12), SmartAgriFood (FP7 Future Internet PPP 2011-2013), FIspace (FI-PPP 2013 -2015), EuroDISH (FP7 2012-2015), FLINT (2014-2018) and the SCAR Collaborative Working Group AKIS (2010 - 2015).
From 2009 – 2011 he worked part-time as Chief Science Officer for Agro-Chains and Fisheries at the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation. This was an advisory role on the use of science in policy making and on identifying future research needs of the Ministry.
Krijn J. Poppe is Honorary Secretary-Treasurer of the EAAEP Foundation that publishes the European Review of Agricultural Economics. He was for 12 years (1999-2011) Secretary-General of the European Association of Agricultural Economists. He is a Fellow of the EAAE. He chairs the Steering Group of the journal EuroChoices and chairs the foundation eRNAC on research concerning cooperatives.  
Krijn J. Poppe is a member of the Province of South-Holland's Advisory Committee on the Quality of the Living' Environment. He has been a non-executive director of the Dutch cooperative Nautilus (active in organic vegetables), and is a member of the board of the Foundation SKAL (that certifies organic businesses) Until may 2017 he co-owned a small arable family farm in Flevoland. and since 2019 an arable farm in Zeeland.

In the period June 2009 – December 2011 Krijn J.
