In Economic Development of France and Germany 1815-1914 gaat J.H. Clapham ook in op de zelfvoorziening met granen (p. 113). Frankrijk was ongeveer zelfvoorzienend, Duitsland exporteerde "The Dutch always used a great deal of imported grain". zo schrijft hij en hij haalt ene Thomas Mun aan die in de 17e eeuw schreef "Their ships are as our ploughs to us, the which except they stir the people starve".

Claphma gaat verder: "To Danzig cam the surpluses of the whole Vistula basin. From Danzig and adjacent Baltic ports the Dutch had got their corn time out of mind. They fed the Spanish with it in Queen Elizabeth's days, while fighting them. They still fed them in 1820.Russian Black |Sea corn began to appear on the European markets after 1815". Vanaf die tijd kwam ook het eerste Amerikaanse en Canadese graan, maar het waren allemaal nog relatief kliene hoeveelheden. Bij de discussie over de Engels corn laws was de Danzig prijs nog immer de referentie.
